About Paul Bourcier
My first cycling event was the extremely hilly Pocono Century Tour in 1983 at the age of 15. I remember placing 8th, and the attention I received from the riders who encouraged me to continue racing. It was the one sport I was good at and it was not very common at the time, and it immediately had me hooked! With the help of a local Olympian and a National Team member, I learned how to train and started traveling to larger events, with the hope of making the Olympics someday. I spent my first year out of college racing full time and had a few solid regional results leading up to the Olympic trials in 1992. It was during these years as a junior and early into senior level racing that I met Bill E and we became teammates and traveling companions, chasing our racing dreams through that ’92 season.
Fast-forward several years of less focus on cycling while “real life” took over, and I moved to Oregon, and a vibrant, welcoming cycling scene that saw me re-immerse myself into racing. A few short years later, the National Championships came to Oregon; In my first year, I placed fourth and two years later I took home a National Championship win.
It was during these years, in my early 40’s, that I began to take a keen interest in a more complete approach to racing and training. I started investing a lot of time and energy on all the small details that help add up to make big gains; different training techniques, recovery, diet, equipment, aerodynamics and all the potential gains from those became my passion. With that more complete focus to detail, I began consistently winning regional masters stage races as well as many top 10 finishes in elite level events. To date, I’ve been on the podium at the National Championships (road, TT and ‘cross) 8 times, an OBRA champion 7 times (open, masters and ‘cross), and 2- top 15 finishes at the Masters World Championships (road and TT).
It was also during this time I decided to branch out from my road roots and try cyclocross. This is where Bill E and I reconnected after many years as I approached him for help in figuring out this new chapter. With Bill’s guidance, I achieved 3 podium appearances at Cyclocross Nationals in just my first few years of the discipline. More importantly, I’d learned even more nuance to training that led to the spark of wanting to help other athletes in pursuit of their goals.
I enjoy sharing my years of experience and enthusiasm of racing, training, tactics, and all the small details in helping create detailed plans that are focused around conquering specific personal goals, all with a keen awareness of the changes and challenges of aging. To that end, and my continued pursuit of marginal gains, I’ve received my certifications in Fitness Exercise Instruction and Fitness Lifestyle Specialist (Lane Community College, 2021), as well as my ACSM Personal Trainer Certification (2021)–the gold standard in personal training–to help give athletes every possible tool for success.

I’ve worked with other coaches over the years, and have gone down the road of self coaching but working with Paul this year has shown that there is still so much more to learn. Paul has provided new insights that helped me optimize my base and strength training that led to achieving new bests for my sprint power. Additionally, whenever I have questions on training or results, Paul is always quick to respond with informed wisdom and recommendations.
At 46, I’ve had one of my best seasons ever and achieved my major goal for the season. I can confidently say that working with Paul has been a big part of that success.

Paul was instrumental in my cyclocross success this year; I won the overall 50+ women’s category for the Cross Crusade cyclocross series, which is highly coveted and competitive in Oregon and southern Washington. After racing cross for nearly a decade, this was my best year ever! Paul was very involved in all aspects of my training: gear choice, frequency/intensity of intervals, strength building, skills practice, race strategy, and ensuring adequate rest. Additionally, Paul is very positive and supportive, and his knowledge of bike racing is vast. It was a pleasure working with him and I highly recommend him as a coach!
