About Elliston Coaching

Our coaching is founded on our own real-world training and racing experiences, and several key principles that have helped paved our path.

We have a strong belief in periodized training and a bottom-up approach. Cycling is, at its core, an endurance sport, and there is no short cut to success. Laying a proper foundation and working upwards from there has always been a key to consistency, longevity, and success, and a process which we employ successfully.

We also believe strongly in not just a formal athlete-client relationship, but in cultivating friendships with our clients. We understand that every athlete has a different background, life situation, and amount of time to devote to their goals, so we strive to get to know our athletes on every level, allowing us to tailor programs specifically, taking into account all their needs, to allow them the best possible chance for success.

Along with this, communication is a huge key to success; potentially a very underrated one by many. At some point in life, we’ve all experienced how the best laid plans on paper can mean nothing when life gets in the way! We understand this, and strive to–and encourage–keeping open lines of communication to be able help clients navigate uncertainties with their training. This can be as simple as in-depth explanations of the how and why of certain workouts; navigating unexpected stress, illness, or time off the bike; and educating athletes to understand how to “feel” workouts, understand the “cost” of them, and being able to convey that verbally and in written format in their training journals for their own future access.

Lastly, while we largely rely on our 85 plus years of experience, we understand the value of incorporating modern technology of power and HR into helping shape our programs. So while we may convey things somewhat simply sometimes, to help athletes get the best grasp, all of our programs are blended with old world and new world styles to help each athlete successfully navigate the path to their goals.

“I have known Bill since I began racing and he has always provided a solid sounding board for me in regard to my training, racing, and psychological preparation for competition. He is able to accurately assess my training and help me focus it to achieve my goals. He has an excellent ability to juggle training with athlete’s jobs, families, and life obligations. He’s also a great communicator who has an ability to work well with cyclists of all levels. His extensive experience makes him a solid fit as a coach to any cyclist.”

“Training with Bill for the past several seasons has helped me tremendously to become a better athlete, both mentally and physically. His experience, wealth of knowledge, and ability to relate to and quickly identify many of the issues we encounter–even before we experience them–is a part of what makes working with him so great. Under Bill’s tutelage, I’ve been privileged to win numerous Cross Country titles, National Road Championships titles, National Time Trial titles, as well as other major local races. I’ve also won numerous races regionally, and achieved success internationally with the highlight being a silver medal at the 2021 Caribbean Cycling Championships Road Race.

Living in Belize, where we have only road racing, Bill has also helped me to make the transition to criterium style racing in the US. I quickly went from not finishing my first race to winning my 20th race, and a good number of podium finishes. The best thing coming from is signing with LA Sweat for the 2022 season!”
